1. St. John's Wort (Hypericum perforatum) — Aerial Parts
Overview: St. John's Wort is an herb commonly used for mild to moderate depression and anxiety. Its active compounds (hypericin, hyperforin) influence serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine pathways.
Health Effects:
- Antidepressant: May support mood in cases of mild to moderate depression. Not a substitute for prescription antidepressants.
- Anxiety Relief: May reduce anxiety symptoms by modulating neurotransmitter activity.
- Wound Healing: Used topically for minor cuts and burns due to anti-inflammatory properties.
Warnings:
- ⚠ Drug Interactions (CYP450): St. John's Wort is a potent inducer of cytochrome P450 enzymes and P-glycoprotein. It can significantly reduce the effectiveness of: birth control pills, blood thinners (warfarin), HIV medications, cyclosporine, certain cancer drugs, antidepressants (SSRIs), and many other prescription medications. Consult your doctor before use if you take any medication.
- ⚠ Serotonin Syndrome: When combined with SSRIs, SNRIs, or other serotonergic drugs, there is a risk of serotonin syndrome — a potentially life-threatening condition. Do not combine with antidepressants without medical supervision.
- UV Sensitivity (Photosensitivity): May increase skin sensitivity to sunlight and UV radiation. Avoid prolonged sun exposure or tanning beds during use.
- Pregnancy & Nursing: Not recommended. Limited safety data; potential hormonal effects.
- Children: Not recommended for use in individuals under 18 without medical supervision.
2. Aloe (Aloe vera)
Overview: Aloe gel (inner leaf) is widely used topically for skin soothing. Aloe latex (outer leaf skin) acts as a stimulant laxative and carries a distinct and more serious risk profile.
Health Effects:
- Digestive Health: Aloe latex stimulates bowel movements; aloe gel may soothe the GI tract.

- Antioxidant Properties: May support skin and immune health.
Warnings:
- ⚠ Aloe Latex — Serious GI Risk: Aloe latex can cause severe cramping, diarrhea, and electrolyte imbalances. Do not use if you have diarrhea, abdominal pain, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), Crohn's disease, or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
- Drug Interactions: May interact with diuretics, diabetes medications (hypoglycemia risk), digoxin, and stimulant laxatives. Consult a healthcare provider before use if on any medications.
- Electrolyte Depletion: Prolonged use of aloe latex may cause dangerously low potassium levels (hypokalemia), which can affect heart function.

3. Chaparral (Larrea tridentata) — Greasewood
Overview: Chaparral has been used traditionally for its antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. However, it carries one of the most serious safety profiles of any herbal supplement.
Health Effects:
- Antioxidant: Contains nordihydroguaiaretic acid (NDGA), a potent antioxidant.
- Historically used for respiratory conditions and inflammation.
Warnings:
- ⚠ FDA Advisory — Liver & Kidney Toxicity: The FDA has issued warnings linking Chaparral to severe, potentially irreversible liver damage and kidney toxicity, including cases of acute liver failure requiring transplant. This ingredient carries serious risk.
- Do not use if you have any history of liver or kidney disease, consume alcohol regularly, or are taking any hepatotoxic medications (e.g., acetaminophen/Tylenol, statins, methotrexate).
- Discontinue immediately if you experience fatigue, nausea, abdominal pain, jaundice (yellowing of skin or eyes), dark urine, or light-colored stools — these may indicate liver damage.
- Pregnancy & Nursing: Avoid use entirely.
- Children: Not appropriate for use in individuals under 18.
4. Buckthorn (Rhamnus species)
Overview: Buckthorn bark and berries contain anthraquinone glycosides that act as stimulant laxatives.
Health Effects:
- Laxative Effect: Stimulates intestinal contractions to relieve constipation.
Warnings:
- ⚠ Short-Term Use Only: Do not use for more than 7 consecutive days without medical supervision. Prolonged use can cause laxative dependence and worsen chronic constipation.

6. Turkey Rhubarb (Rheum palmatum)

- Digestive Support: May reduce bloating and support GI function at lower doses.
Warnings:

- Oxalate Content: High oxalate content may increase the risk of kidney stones in susceptible individuals. Avoid if you have a history of kidney stones or kidney disease.

7. Walnuts (Juglans regia)

Warnings:

9. Kava (Piper methysticum)
Overview: Kava root is used traditionally in the South Pacific for relaxation and anxiety relief. It acts on GABA receptors in the brain.

- Anxiety & Stress Relief: May reduce anxiety and promote calm without significant cognitive impairment.
- Mood Enhancement: Promotes relaxation and sociability.
Warnings:
- ⚠ FDA Warning — Severe Liver Injury: The FDA has issued a consumer advisory warning that Kava has been associated with severe liver injury, including hepatitis, cirrhosis, and liver failure, in some cases requiring transplant or resulting in death. Do not use if you have liver disease or elevated liver enzymes.
- ⚠ Alcohol: Do not combine with alcohol. Kava significantly amplifies alcohol's hepatotoxic and sedative effects.
- ⚠ Acetaminophen (Tylenol): Avoid concurrent use with acetaminophen or other hepatotoxic substances, as the combination may dramatically increase liver injury risk.
- CNS Depressants: May amplify the effects of benzodiazepines, opioids, sleep aids, and other sedative medications. Do not combine without medical supervision.
- Driving & Machinery: May impair motor function and reaction time. Do not drive or operate heavy machinery after use.
- Pregnancy & Nursing: Avoid use entirely.
- Children: Not appropriate for individuals under 18.
10. Psyllium Husk (Plantago ovata)
Overview: A soluble fiber supplement derived from Plantago seeds, widely used for digestive regularity and cholesterol management.
Health Effects:
- Digestive Health: Promotes regular bowel movements; may help manage IBS symptoms.
- Cholesterol Reduction: FDA-authorized health claim for reducing risk of heart disease when used as part of a low-fat diet.
- Blood Sugar Regulation: May help moderate post-meal blood glucose spikes.
Warnings:
- ⚠ Choking Hazard: Must be taken with a full glass of water (at least 8 oz). Do not use if you have difficulty swallowing, esophageal narrowing, or any condition that restricts the esophagus. Failure to take with adequate water can cause the product to swell and block the throat or esophagus.
- Drug Absorption: Psyllium can reduce the absorption of certain medications. Take all prescription medications at least 1–2 hours before or after psyllium.
- Allergic Reactions: Rare but documented cases of severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, have been reported, particularly in individuals with occupational exposure to psyllium dust.
- Pregnancy & Nursing: Generally considered safe; consult your doctor before use.
