  • Mitochondrial activation: Photobiomodulation (PBM) stimulates cytochrome c oxidase in your cells, improving cellular energy production — which may reduce the physiological "stress load" that keeps you wired at night.
  • Cortisol regulation: Some evidence suggests red light therapy may help normalize cortisol rhythms, supporting a healthier stress-to-rest transition in the evening.

How to Use Red Light Therapy for Sleep

Timing and consistency matter more than duration. Here's a simple protocol:

  • When: 30–60 minutes before bed
  • Duration: 10–20 minutes per session
  • Distance: 6–18 inches from the device, depending on output
  • Wavelength: Look for 660nm (red) and/or 850nm (near-infrared) — both have been studied for sleep and recovery
  • Environment: Dim other lights in the room; let red light be your primary light source during the session

Avoid using red light therapy in a brightly lit room — the benefit comes partly from replacing stimulating blue/white light with calming red wavelengths in your pre-sleep window.


What to Look for in a Red Light Therapy Device
